Fiasco at the Fair – Pamela Traynor

What’s a nine-year-old boy to do when he finds a mysterious glow in the place of a missing book in the school library? Share his discovery with his best friend and cousin, of course! Fiasco at the Fair by Pamela Traynor is an engaging mystery chapter book. Although intended for children from ages seven to ten, adults will also get a kick out of Jason and Beth who set out to discover where the missing book is and how it’s linked to the problems at the fair. Their investigations soon lead them to the realization that a grudgeful ghost may be the culprit, but what can they do to stop him from ruining the fair? And why is the mysterious glow getting bigger and louder?

Fiasco at the Fair took me thirty-six years back in time and made me feel like a child again. This fast-paced chapter book is action-packed, funny and scary, but in the nicest possible way for young children. Beth, a feisty ten-year-old, and Jason, who is more introspective, make for a mischievous duo who get things done. Pamela Traynor has found the formula for creating irresistible fiction for young readers, both drawing them in and compelling them to read right through to the end. If you have a young child who is developing the skill of independent reading, Fiasco at the Fair will not only make that skill attainable but highly enjoyable. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series – bring it on!
